Nüket Esen

Nuket Esen Tezcan, professionally known as Nuket Esen, was born in January 18, 1849, in Istanbul to Kamile Esen and construction engineer Ekrem Tezcan. She graduated from Arnavutköy American College for Girls with a literature minor in 1969. She received her BA from the department of English Language and Literature in Bogazici University in 1979, her MA from the department of Sociology in the same university in 1983 and her Ph.D. from the department of Turkish Language and Literature in Marmara University in 1989. Her BA, MA, and Ph.D. theses are respectively titled “Political Novel in 19th Century England”, “The Changing Power of Alevi Dedes in South West Anatolia” and “Family Concept in Turkish Novel (1870-1970)”. Nuket Esen became an associate professor in November 1996, and a professor in October 2002.

Her first published paper, “Tanzimat Romanında Yazarın Konumu”, was featured in Gösteri magazine in May, 1986. Her Ph.D. thesis, titled “Family Concept in Turkish Novel” was turned into a book and published by Bogazici University Publishing in 1990. She has lectured in the Turkish Language and Literature Department in Bogazici University in undergraduate and graduate levels since 1989. She was also the head of the department since 2002. She worked as a visiting scholar in Washing University between February – June, 2001. In December 2006, she interviewed Orhan Pamuk (with Prof. Johanson and Prof. Brendemoen) for his Nobel Prize in Literature win in Uppsala University, Sweden. She is on the editor board of Journal of Turkish Literature (published by Bilkent University) and Kadın/Woman 2000 (published by Eastern Mediterranean University). She worked as a referee on journals such as Bilig Dergisi, New Perspectives on Turkey and Yeni Türk Edebiyatı Dergisi. She was awarded with Achievement in Research Award by Bogazici University Trust in 2006.

She organized Adalet Agaoglu Symposium in 2002, Ahmet Mithat Symposium in 2004, and Orhan Pamuk Symposium in 2007. She was on the jury of Erdal Öz Literature Prize between 2008-2012.
